MOJO December 2013
Martin Aston has written an article about the first TWW album in Mojo. Entitled ‘All Aggro’d Up’ it highlights again the very special quality of this criminally under-rated album. Read the full article here.
“However, Stamp was also penning lyrics worthy of a Marxist proto-punk, such as, “Up from the slums and the factory grime.. . Go let your Molotov off!" Britain's rock scene was totally unprepared. The band hadn’t played live before the album’s release, and Melody Maker's Roy Hollingworth concluded, "They are the worst band I have ever heard perform, ever... I felt like soaking myself in vodka, setting myself alight and flinging my body from a balcony in protest.””

Terry Live in France!
Terry played a number of gigs at the Cognac Blues Festival in July 2007. There are now three short clips on youtube of songs performed at the Cognac Blues Festival in 2007.
Howling for the Highway Home’, the album from Terry Stamp is available on Burning ShedNOW! Produced by Alistair Murphy it is the eagerly awaited follow up to ‘Bootlace Johnnie and the Ninety Nines’.
Paul Weller, of the Jam and the Style Council, has covered one of Terry’s songs “Tobacco Ash Sunday”. A video of his performance can be viewed here The song was orginally recorded by the band Harsh Reality.
Marcus Gray, author of the Clash book ‘Return of the Last Gang in Town’ has written a fascinating four-page article about Third World War in this month’s Classic Rock. Marcus has spoken to all of the main players, Jim and Terry as well as TWW manager John Fenton and the rest of the band. Along with much new information there are some great previously unseen pictures.
‘At the start of the Seventies, no-one else was offering dirty realism quite as dirty as this, or projecting the same level of social menace. Listening to the album even 35 years later, your jaw hits the floor in shock and awe after the first verse and stays there till the last bellow dies away.
The Bootlace Johnny track 'Tender Guillotine' reveals Stamp to be more sentimental about TWW than he tends to admit. Telling the story of the band with ill-disguised affection, it closes with the lines: 'We kicked their arseholes then / And we'll kick their arseholes now.
If you never give up, you have the right to remain defiant.’
Another new convert!
Henry Rollins of Black Flag and the Rollins Band has name checked Third World War on his website and played Ascension Day on his radio programme in the States.
Third World War - Ascension Day: From the Third World War CD. I know, you heard of this band a long time ago and are bored already. As you know, I am usually late to class on a lot of things. I was at Ian’s the other night and he put this album on and asked me if I had ever heard of the band. Of course not. Sounds like Skrewdriver heard this album at least once or twice. I was able to find their two albums on CD and got them. I have not checked out the 2nd much yet but I will. The first album is really cool. I am surprised no one pointed this one out to me before. Check out Terry Stamp’s vocals. This album was recorded in 1970 and released in 1971. Lyric wise, it sounds like pre-white power Skrewdriver and almost Oi. I don’t remember seeing Jimmy Pursey of Sham 69 ever mention this band.
A surprise cover version by Marc Almond of the song ‘Stardom Road’ from TWW’s first album is due for release in spring 2007 - read all about it on the News Archive page...

Joe Strummer walked up to me at the bar and said,
“Were you in Third World War?”
I said “Yes”, and he shook my hand.
“You guys were doing it when everything else was dead...”
Jim Avery 2004
Listening this week to the Clash’s album, noting its attitude and sentiments, I was driven back to Third World War, and having played the old album a couple of times afresh I'm convinced that it is one of the most prophetic yet neglected items in all of British rock.
Richard Williams - Melody Maker 1977
This album has the best title of any record ever released, and it represents a bizarre and inexplicable tangent of my taste - extreme English boogie rock....this record gets the nod for its abrasive personality, impressively rude guitar playing and no-holds-barred radical communist lyricism... Crucial.
Steve Albini, Melody Maker July 9th 1994
'Well, I kicked on my mule, and he obeyed me,
Everyone else snuffed and delayed me.
They said you ain't got the voice,
And you ain’t got the chords,
And yer living in Bayswater, on floorboards.
And you won’t,
No you won’t, no you won’t,
Take that load
Up Stardom Road.'
